     Kutaisi is located along both banks of the Rioni River.     The city lies at an elevation of 125-300 meters (410-984 feet) above sea level. To the east and northeast, Kutaisi is bounded by the Northern Imereti Foothills, to the north by the Samgurali Range, and to the west and the south by the Colchis Plain.

    Kutaisi was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis. Archeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of the kingdom of Colchis as early as the second millennium BC. 

Several historians believe that in Argonautica, a Greek epic poem about Jasonand the Argonauts and their journey to Colchis, Apollonius Rhodius, the author, considered Kutaisi their final destination and the residence of King Aeëtes. From 978 to 1122 CE, Kutaisi was the capital of the united Kingdom of Georgia, and from the 15th century until 1810 it was the capital of the Imeretian Kingdom.

My City KUTAISI

  I would like to share my impressions about my city with you.My city is very old,it is the city with ancient culture /traditions and prosperous future.It is active politically as well, it is the city  where our parliaments is, so all the politicians,ministries or people of importance visit it every day. All above mentioned things gave the city extra charm.It is not all,if you want to see interesting sights visit KUTAISI. I am sure you’ll have the same impressions.

• ·       Simon Kaukhchishvili  (October 1, 1895 – May 11, 1981) was a Georgian historian and philologist known for his critical editions of old Georgian chronicles; Doctor of Sciences (1927), Professor (1930), Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1968).He was born to a Georgian Catholic family in Kutaisi.

• ·      Zakharia Paliasvili (1871-1933) Georgian composer,conductor, teacher and public figure, was the founder of the Georgian scool of  composition. His  masterpieces : ,,Abesalom  and Eteri’’ , ,,Daisi’’, ,,Latavra’’ ..
• .Zakaria was the third child in a family of eighteen children (thirteen sons and five daughters). Seven children died in infancy. Thought Zakaria's parents were not professional musicians, their children remembered their mother's singing  In his autobiographical notes Zakaria Paliashvili writes: "...in our big family, my brothers and sisters displayed a natural gift of music even in their early age. To my mind the explanation of this should be sought in the fact that we, being catholics attended the church where the sweet sounds of organ music are not only enjoyable but help develop a good ear... we spend much time in the church and gradually developed a good ear.." 

His  Kutaisi house-museum was founded in 1953.He lived there in 1871-1887

·         Akaki  Tzereteli  (1840-1915) a great  Georgian  poet and public figure, studed at the Kutaisi Gumnasium . 
      He is an author of hundreds of patriotic, historical, lyrical and satiric poems, also humoristic stories and autobiographic novel. Ak'ak'i Tsereteli was also active in educational, journalistic and theatrical activities.

The famous Georgian folk song Suliko  is based on Ak'ak'i Tsereteli’s lyrics.
